We’ve noticed there’s a bit of a homewares trend going on with Babushka dolls. In fact, earlier this year when we moved into our new home we were given two sets of Babushkas. One set were made from funky white porcelain and have pride of place on our mantle piece. The others were actually a set of measuring cups, which not only look pretty but are very handy in the kitchen too.
In case you didn’t know, Babushka dolls, also know as Matryoshki or Russian nesting dolls, are sets of dolls which decrease in size and are placed into one another. The story goes that Matryoshki is based on the Latin root word ‘mater’, which is Russian for ‘mother’. The first set of babushka dolls is believed to date all the way back to 1890. The fact that they are having a resurgence in poularity right now goes to show how cyclical fashion and design are.
And really, what’s not to love about them – they are very cute! Here’s a few we found online which you might like.
Have a lovely day. x.
